Modern design meets tradition

The new Science and Engineering Complex (SEC), part of the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), is one of the most energy-efficient research buildings in the world. Designed by Behnisch Architekten in Boston, it is the first building at the new university campus in Boston’s Allston district.

The approximately 50,000 sqm eight-storey building is divided into three volumes. These are situated around two atria, one of six and one of three floors, which also allow natural light and fresh air inside. Lecture halls, seminar rooms, teaching labs, reconfigurable classrooms and communal areas are located on the ground floor and lower floors. To the south, the lower three floors with green roof terraces merge into the landscape. The upper floors offer more than 6,400 square metres of space for test laboratories for biologists, chemists, physicists and electrical engineers. A further 2,200 square metres are reserved for the computer laboratories. Lounge zones covering several floors connect the lab areas with each other.

A touch of modernity with X-TEND
Our X-TEND stainless steel mesh was used both inside and out as balustrade infill and, simultaneously, fall protection. The balustrade infill blends with the modern design, which features white surfaces and wooden accents. Around 1,200 square metres of X-TEND stainless steel mesh with a mesh width of 60 millimetres and a cable diameter of 2 millimetres were used in this project. The securing element horizontally is an I-SYS cable system with a diameter of 8 millimetres which consists of threaded fittings at both ends of the cable. Vertically, the net was mounted on round rods welded to the balustrade posts.

Keeping a clear view with X-TEND

Regardless of whether it is used inside or out, the modern appearance guarantees an unrestricted view and offers maximum safety. X-TEND consists of high-quality, sturdy stainless steel cables. In a specially developed procedure, these are pressed with stainless steel ferrules to form a resilient and flexible mesh structure for two- and three-dimensional applications. X-TEND keeps its shape, is easy to look after and effectively maintenance-free.
