A piece of Australia in Stuttgart

On the former border strip between Berlin-Mitte

The Wilhelma in Stuttgart is a unique combination of zoo and Kreuzberg, the socially responsible and ecological residential project "Passive House Engeldamm" (PHED). The building, which was awarded the Audience Award by the Association of German Architects in 2012, is surrounded by an X-TEND stainless steel cable mesh. The stainless steel curtain serves as a fall protection for Botanik, the balconies. Rectangular frames on L-profiles are integrated into a historical castle complex without any additional substructure. About 11,000 animals of over 1,200 species from all over the world live on around 28 hectares. It is the second most species-rich zoo and is the only zoological-botanical garden in Germany. The main attractions include the ape house, the Amazon house, the aquarium and the crocodile hall. The crocodile hall is the common habitat for numerous Australian reptiles, amphibians, birds and plants.

Conversion of the crocodile hall Wilhelma Stuttgart

In 2005/2006 the crocodile hall in the Wilhelma in Stuttgart was converted and one modeled on the north Australian landscape. The crocodile hall was opened in March 2006 and four saltwater crocodiles, including two white ones, moved into the new quarter. The railing was installed with a double rope net construction. Because Australian estuarine crocodiles can jump up to 3 meters high. Crocodiles are extremely dangerous hunters. The double crocodile fence by Carl Stahl ARC gives visitors a “floating window cutout”.

A close but safe view of the crocodiles. Our X-TEND stainless steel cable net is colored black and is thus integrated almost invisibly into the environment.
