Embedded in the natural landscape

The Opel Zoo has a big name. The zoo was founded in 1956 by Georg von Opel, a member of the famous family of car manufacturers, where not only visitors can admire the variety of fauna, but also research is traditionally carried out here. This concern is underlined by the participation of the "Georg von Opel - Freigehege für Tierforschung e.V." foundation.

Among the research objects worthy of protection in the Opel Zoo are, for example, storks and exotic waterfowl. To ensure that these can live in as natural an environment as possible, they were housed in a walk-in aviary in 2008. The flexible, robust and springy X-TEND stainless steel cable mesh provides for the limitation of the "air space".

Walking, swimming, flying - the diversity of the Opel Zoo

In the early 2000s, the Opel Zoo invested a lot of money in modernizing and expanding its facilities. For example, the "African Savannah" for the giraffes, zebras, wildebeests and impalas was created, but also a new aquaterrarium. Native reptiles and amphibians are still at home there today.

On September 6th, 2008 the zoo was extended by a further attraction. On this day, foundation board member Gregor von Opel and zoo director Thomas Kauffels opened the walk-in volliere. Cost of the facility - 1.5 million euros. The endangered bald ibis now lives here, among others. Together with the Innsbruck Alpine Zoo, the Opel Zoo coordinates a breeding program here. Artificial pylons and trees support the X-TEND stainless steel cable mesh

The X-TEND stainless steel cable mesh stretches over the volliere over an area of around 1,800 m². Several 12 metres and even higher pylons stabilise the net. It is attached to these pylons with the I-SYS stainless steel cable tension members. The tree population was integrated into the mesh area in a particularly gentle manner.
